The Cape Cod Tech Smoking Policy

A student who violates any school rule relating to alcohol, drugs, or smoking/chewing or tobacco in school shall participate in school sponsored counseling (in addition to paying the penalty imposed for a particular rule violation. Per section 1-Chapter 71 of the General Laws of Massachusetts, Section 2A, it shall be unlawful for any student, enrolled in either primary or secondary public schools in the Commonwealth, to use tobacco products of any type on school grounds during normal school hours. This applies to all operational hours at Cape Cod Tech. Therefore, students who are found breaking the smoking rules will be the recipient of a detention and be required to complete an Anti-Smoking Learning Packet. The Anti-Smoking Learning Packet will be corrected by the In-School Supervisor in the presence of the offending student. Offender must attend remediation session.

Second and subsequent offenders may receive additional detentions or 3-5 out of school suspensions.

Offending students may also receive fines from the Harwich Police Department.

State Law and School Prohibition on smoking on the bus will be in effect. There will be no smoking upon entering the building and leaving the building. Outside areas are not sanctioned smoking areas. In addition, students will not be allowed to walk around the building by the main doors and other doors in front of the building. Students waiting for late buses and athletic buses will not be allowed to smoke. Offenders will be subject to Smoking policy discipline. Athletic buses will be monitored by coaches.

Smoking on the outside job is prohibited for all students. Smoking in the school vans and other school vehicles is also prohibited. Carrying of cigarettes by a student under the age of 18 will result in the confiscation of that contraband and the assignment of a detention, plus the completion of an Anti-Smoking Packet.

Possessing an unlit cigarette in one’s hand will be treated as violation of the school smoking rules. Smoking in the lavatories, stairwells, and other locations is a maximum five day suspension. Being present where there is smoking or smoke could result in a suspension. Both offenses require the completion of learning packets. In the event of a Smoker’s Cessation Group being sponsored by Cape Cod Tech, students who break the smoking policy will be required to participate or face additional suspension time.
