In 2005, the Earth/Environmental Science students decided to get onboard and help the entire school become more eco-friendly. They set-up and facilitated a school wide paper/cardboard and bottle/can recycling program, and named themselves “The GreenBean Recycling Machine”. This recycling program is now embedded into the Earth/Environmental Science curriculum, thus allowing our students to collect, sort and recycle the entire building’s paper and bottles waste, on a weekly basis. On a weekly basis we recycle approximately 6-8 cubic yards of cardboard and paper, and collect 300-400 bottles and cans. We have estimated our recycling efforts of a school year is approximately 228 yards and bottle/can collection is roughly 12,600. In 2007, our “GreenBeans” received the “Massachusetts Environment Education Secretary’s Award of Excellence.” We could not have accomplish this impressive effort without the help of Allied Waste Management, as they donate the recycling pick-up services to our school.

Over the years, we have expanded our recycling program to include the collection and recycling of clothing, ink print cartages, scrap metals, cell phone and electronic waste. In the near future, we are hoping to add composting bins to our Culinary Arts, Cafeteria program, and Horticulture programs.
